Says Yvonne: “I'm pleased to let you know that my new album Ashes & Gold is now here! Ten brand new songs all wrapped up with some beautiful artwork ready to make their way in the world. Recorded at the Foundry Music Lab with Graeme Duffin, Sandy Jones and a lovely bunch of friends. The thoughts and ideas for some of these songs have been gathered and stored, captured and hoarded with the hope that that would grow into something resembling songs.

Some grew very quickly, others however came to life in the studio, the results of collaboration with DL. Working with Sandy and Graeme once again was such a privilege and has reminded me that I have many important people around me on this journey without whom my songs would have only half the life I give them.”

Eric Bogle  -  'The Dreamer'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Eric Bogle - 'The Dreamer'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'The Dreamer' by Eric Bogle.

'The Dreamer' is Eric Bogle's 15th album and is released as Eric prepares to hang up his 'touring boots' and embark on a final UK tour. As always, Eric will be accompanied by his long-time buddy John Munro, who has produced this and other Eric Bogle albums.

A compulsive, almost obsessive songwriter for most of his adult life, Eric has written some songs that have pretty much become Australian (if not world) classics of their particular genre. Possibly his best known song is The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, which confirmed its status by appearing as a question in the Australian version of Trivial Pursuit!

Together with his touring partner John Munro, Eric has literally taken his music to the world. He has toured extensively over the last 25 years or so, and this includes 8 tours of North America, 10 tours of Europe and many tours of Australia. He has appeared at every major folk and Country music festival in Australia and around the world.

He has won many awards along the way, including the Order Of Australia medal for services to the entertainment industry and a Peace Medal from the United Nations for his efforts, through music, to promote peace and racial harmony. In Scotland he was recognised by the Scots Trad Music Awards and has been placed in their Hall Of Fame.

'The Dreamer' is yet another fine clutch of songs from Eric, plus one by John Munro. The songs are thought- provoking as always and bound to move the listener.

Olov Johansson and Catriona McKay  -  'Foogy'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Olov Johansson and Catriona McKay - 'Foogy'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Foogy' by Olov Johansson and Catriona McKay.

Olov Johansson and Catriona McKay have teamed up to create an album that is big, bold and bursting with amazing sound. Johansson’s nyckelharpa and McKay’s harp complement each other perfectly on this thirteen-track collection of primarily original compositions. Fresh, inventive arrangements give both artists the opportunity to show the full character of their instruments.

The opening track “1st Class to Glasgow” is delightfully upbeat and gives a good taste of the overall feel of Foogy. Both artists excel on rapid-fire runs and there are plenty found throughout, especially on “Rain/Ekoln,” “In The Castle,” and “The Foogy Set.” Equally capable at the other end of the spectrum, McKay and Johansson deliver an achingly beautiful performance on “The Harper’s Dismissal.”

'Foogy' is exciting, contemporary and a definite breath of fresh air. I sincerely hope Johansson and McKay continue to collaborate on future projects.

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Po Girl - 'Deer In The Night'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Deer in the Night' by Po' Girl.

The beauty and mystery of Po Girl's music – a sound that has beguiled fans the world over - springs from the dynamic, improbable, mesmerizing bond shared by its two principal singers and writers – Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira. Hailing from Montreal and Toronto respectively, both women left untenable home situations at fourteen, found music instead of bad ends, and lived to sing the tales.

The interplay between these two stunning performers is truly something to behold – and after honing it relentlessly in 13 countries in the last 12 months, the ladies are set to release a true testament to their bond and to their tremendous growth as writers in the last years. Casual Po' Girl fans may not be ready for what they will hear…

After adding the impossibly talented tickler/maker of all stringed things - Benny Sidelinger - to their number last year, Po' Girl holed up in Austin, Texas this June past making the record that will almost certainly change forever the way the band is perceived. 'Deer in the Night' is set to be released in North America in April 2009, and in the UK/Europe May 2009. Many of the trappings of the trademark Po' Girl sound are still there – the echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament, the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk --- but it's all delivered with a soulful clarity and depth only hinted at on previous records.

Dan Milner & Guest Artists  -  'Irish Pirate Ballads and Other Songs of the Sea'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Dan Milner & Guest Artists - 'Irish Pirate Ballads and Other Songs of the Sea'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Irish Pirate Ballads and Other Songs of the Sea' by Dan Milner & Guest Artists.

Pirates, shanghaiers, slavers, and smugglers are just some of the central characters in this album of lusty, authentic maritime songs; others are ardent patriots, hard-pressed immigrants, and weathered sailors sheltering in the taverns of the seven seas. All are midway between some dicey spot in life and an uncertain future. Their compelling stories of bold adventure are excitingly re-told here by an all-star crew of Irish singers and musicians led by vocalist/author Dan Milner.

Featuring an impressive array of guest musicians and singers, including Joanie Madden of Cherish the Ladies, John Doyle of Solas, Tim Collins of the renowned Kilfenora Ceili Band, All-Ireland champion fiddler Brian Conway, Robbie O'Connell and Susan McKeown, Irish Pirate Ballads captures centuries of tradition and the revelry, mischief, tales of love and caution that characterize nautical life.

Milner "really gets inside a song and brings it alive," writes New York University professor Mick Moloney, who also appears on the album. "It's impossible not to be drawn in by the imagery of these songs and the absorbing stories they tell of memorable rakes, adventurers and scoundrels."

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Alan Reid and Rob Van Sante - 'The Rise & Fall o' Charlie'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'The Rise & Fall o' Charlie' by Alan Reid and Rob Van Sante.

This CD charts in song the rise & fall of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) from his arrival as a 21 year old in the North West of Scotland to raise an army and wrest the throne of Britain back to the Stuarts through to the crushing defeat of Culloden, his ultimate failure and death in exile.

Keyboard player and singer Alan Reid and singer-guitarist Rob van Sante are best known for their involvement with Battlefield Band, but they make up a fine duo. Alan and Rob have put together an excellent CD 'The Rise & Fall o' Charlie' with some great traditonal songs and excellent ensemble of singers and musicians.

The CD starts off with the rousing rallying call of 'Sound the Pibroch'. There a couple of Gaelic songs featuring Maeve Mackinnon including the lovely 'Oran Do Phriunnsa Tearlach' (Song for Prince Charles) and the powerful 'Mile Marbhphaisg Air An T-Saoghal' (A 1000 Curses on the World). The album finishes with the poignant Lady Nairne song "Will Ye No Come Back Again'.

Simply Burns  -  'Simply Burns'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Simply Burns - 'Simply Burns'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Simply Burns' by Simply Burns.

In January 2008, four talented individuals came together to create an evening of song, poetry and readings in celebration of Scotland's best-loved bard, Robert Burns. Their aim was to offer an eclectic collection of material written by and inspired by Robert Burns - some of it familiar, and some less so - designed both to entertain, and to simplify the man and his works for those who find it all a bit daunting.

The show, called 'Simply Burns', was presented to a packed house at the Watermill bookshop in Aberfeldy, Highland Perthshire. It was intended to be a one-time-only event, but as time went by requests were regularly received for it to be repeated. Eventually, the artists decided to revive the show and take it on the road throughout Scotland and beyond. The artists who perform the show are Douglas Craik (vocals and guitar), Linda Dewar (vocals, guitar), Anna Hepburn (spoken word) and Claire Hewitt (vocals, clarsach).

Celtic Music Radio is delighted to support the ‘Simply Burns’ CD. Purchase it here: www.simplyburns.com/CDs.htm

Andi Neate  -  'Crows, Rooks and Ravens'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Andi Neate - 'Crows, Rooks and Ravens'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Crows, Rooks and Ravens' by Andi Neate.

"Crows, Rooks and Ravens" have long been associated with myths, fables and folk tales. They are symbols of dark goddesses including the Valkyries of Norse legends and the Irish Morrigan. They are contradictory – symbols of death but also of hope – and enigmatic – they are travellers and keepers of secrets.

The 13 songs (and 2 bonus tracks) on Scottish singer/songwriter Andi Neate’s fifth album - "Crows, Rooks and Ravens" - tell a traveller’s tales of endings and beginnings, journeys and homecomings. There are songs about circuses and rocketships, night driving and fairy tales, peopled with colourful characters – the lion tamer, the astronaut, Mr Romeo and Storybookman – sharply observed and lightly drawn, with an emotional honesty which makes them easy to connect with.

Andi is an expressive performer, with a gift for melody, memorable hooks and delightfully offbeat lyrics. Her voice ranges from powerhouse to wistful sweetness; her music draws from folk, rock and jazz... and a touch of gospel.

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Strewn with Ribbons' by Lauren MacColl.

Fiddler Lauren MacColl's self-issued debut album, When Leaves Fall, was very well received on its release two years ago, and was granted a perhaps slightly premature status in one of the concerts in the Classic Album series at this year's Celtic Connections festival. Her second release 'Strewn with Ribbons' builds on the considerable strengths of that debut, and combines a selection of MacColl's own attractive tunes with a fruitful trawl through some gems from her home patch in the east Highlands, unearthed in the Highland Collections series published by Highland Music Trust.

She handles the slow airs and laments in moving fashion alongside the effervescent dance tunes. Her refined and expressive fiddling is supported by regular collaborators Barry Reid on guitar and Mhairi Hall on piano, with guests Chris Stout, Donald Shaw and cellist Su-a Lee lending a hand on selected tunes.

Juliet Turner  -  'People Have Names'

Click to purchase Celtic Music Radio's album of the week by Juliet Turner - 'People Have Names'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'People Have Names' by Juliet Turner.

Juliet Turner stumbled into making music. She was given a guitar for her fifteenth birthday and met a poet who told her to start writing her own songs. In 1996 whilst at university in Glasgow, she was offered the chance to record those songs in a little studio called “Heaven” with small independent label “Sticky Music”.

In 2000 Juliet set up her own label “Hear This! Records” with her manager Derek Nally. She released her second album “Burn the Black Suit” on the label and it went double platinum in Ireland.

Described by the Irish Times as ‘one of the most intriguing of Irish female song writers, arriving several years ago with a guitar and a batch of brittle, poignant songs; her broad accent and even broader outlook; her bitter-sweet tastes all marking her as one to watch’, Turner is still an artist marbled with tiny streaks of maverick.

The new batch of songs on 'People Have Names' are thoughtful and less acerbic than some of her previous writing and the narrative lines running through the album are sympathetic and full of warmth. On stage with long time guitarist Brian Grace, Juliet Turner has a wry charm, a beautiful voice and fine lyrics, making her a compelling live performer. Listen for “Elder of the Tribe” and “Luisa” in particular. The release of new material seems to fall in a four year cycle and this new album, released in June 2008, was eagerly anticipated. It did not seem to disappoint, being her most critically acclaimed album to date.

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Out All Night' by Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers.

While Findlay Napier is well known on the live Scottish folk music scene, this fantastic band project looks likely to bring to him to much wider attention both in the UK and much further a field.

The musicians playing on 'Out All Night' all come from a folk background, and elements of folk are easy to identify in the instrumentation and in the 3 tracks with traditional roots, but that only tells half the story of an album that is dominated by songs of everyday people and urban lives full of character, personality and effortless charm.

While identifiably Scottish, especially in Napier’s vocal delivery, the album is dripping in influences from outside of the UK, in amongst the folk you can spot bluegrass, country and elements of more contemporary music.

Martyn Joseph  -  'Evolved'

Click to purchase the new album by Martyn Joseph - 'Evolved'

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Evolved' by Martyn Joseph.

'Evolved' released 27th October this year, is probably Martyn`s most arresting and articulate album to date - a big, bold statement of where he is now, revisiting 15 of his most significant songs and performing and recording them in their evolved, finely honed forms.

This is a strong and stripped back "no hiding place" album that stops you in your tracks - acoustic one-takes with crystal clear vocals and skilful guitar and harmonica playing.

Some songs shift along from their originals with added riffs and the most subtle of nuances; others twist off at thumping tangents, barely recognisable from the way they started life. This album mirrors, perhaps more than any other of Martyn`s studio albums, the hammer blow "once seen, never forgotten" power of his current live performances.

Presented in a sophisticated package designed by Canadian Juno-award winning Michael Wrycraft, this album will blow away those who have never heard him and for those who have, it underlines in the most emphatic way yet, Martyn`s pure professionalism and honesty.

Celtic Music Radio's CD album of the week is 'Girls and Strong Whisky' by Brogue.

Brogue was formed in 2001 and is a musical partnership between Brigitte Rodrigues and David Scobie. David was born in Dundee, Scotland where he was exposed to traditional Scottish Folk music from a young age. When David was six, his parents took him to his first live concert, the popular folk Duo "The Corries" blew David away; his dream to sing was born. In 1973 the Scobie family then moved to Rhodesia.

Brigitte was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia. Initially born deaf, she received surgery at the age of three through which her hearing was restored and as a result received a gift of a piano from her grandparents - thus her love of music began.

One of their first joint projects was to tour Zimbabwe singing and playing music to all the farmers who had either lost their farms, or were in the process of losing their farms to the Government.

Their music is aimed at helping to refresh public interest in traditional Scottish melodies and poems by reinterpreting, rearranging and updating them. Visit their myspace page here.

The Celtic Music Radio CD Album of the Week is 'Amazing', the brand new CD album by Churchfitters.

The group Churchfitters was founded in 1978 by singer/songwriter Anthony McCartan from Belfast and multi-instrumentist Geoff Coombs from Essex.

Rosie Short joined soon after its formation having previously been playing in a London-based traditional Irish outfit. During the years that followed, the group frequently changed its line-up making a point of always including members from diverse musical backgrounds in order to maintain a fresh and original approach to Irish music.

In 1993 the duo decided to move to Brittany and was joined by Rosie's brother Chris who had been in London playing in World, Irish and Bluegrass groups. From their base in Brittany they then toured as a trio throughout France and Europe until Anthony's departure in early 2004.

With the arrival of Boris Lebret (double bass and percussion) and Topher Loudon (vocals and guitar), the group's tradition of breaking with the more classic treatment of Irish music has been upheld. And the unique and unmistakable sound of the Churchfitters continues.

Patrick Street   -   'On the Fly'

Click to purchase Patrick Street's new CD album 'On The Fly'

The Celtic Music Radio CD Album of the Week is 'On the Fly', the most recent CD album by Patrick Street.

Now in their third decade, Patrick Street are considered "the Irish supergroup" with musical heritages dating straight back to The Bothy Band, Planxty and De Dannan.

The new CD indicates the opening of an exciting new chapter for the group, as well as a change in one of its longest-running line-ups.

Andy Irvine has been with Patrick Street since the group formed 22 years ago. Well established as one of Irish music’s leading singers, his compelling canon of material draws across time and borders.

Renowned accordion player and founding member Jackie Daly has decided to step down from the “Street,” and leaves us with some dynamic playing on the album. Meanwhile, respected multi-instrumentalist and newest member John Carty makes his Patrick Street recording debut.

'On the Fly' is the band’s eleventh release and perhaps the most profoundly traditional, with many of the tunes rooted in the rural music of County Sligo. Both John Carty and Kevin Burke spent their early years there, soaking up music that the wider world learned mainly from recordings.

Now considered two of the finest fiddlers of their generations, they team up here for some thrilling sets of tunes. John’s imaginative phrasing and Kevin’s silky tone joyfully portray the rhythmic ebb and flow of the swift, rolling Sligo music on which they were raised.

Lorna Lavelle   -   ‘A Thousand Miles Behind’.

‘A Thousand Miles Behind’ - the new CD from singer-songwriter Lorna Lavelle

This week's Album of the Week is 'A Thousand Miles Behind', the new CD from singer-songwriter Lorna Lavelle.

Lorna Lavelle launched her debut CD album ‘A Thousand Miles Behind’ on 24 March during an exclusive interview on Bill Morris’ evening programme.

After being told for many years, like far too many other women, that she couldn't or shouldn't sing, not even a floor spot, two events happened in quick succession to change that.

Folk legend, the late Bobby Eaglesham, asked her to perform with him at his Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows and independently John McCreadie asked her to collaborate in a new project with him. The path leads from here through the following events, to "A Thousand Miles Behind".

Working with John as a duo, lead to bookings at folk clubs and festivals, but more importantly for Lorna, at sessions, singers she'd admired all her life would say 'Lorna Lavelle for a song.'

The next important development was when Gillian Smith and Gordeanna McCulloch took her under their wing as part of Eurydice and here she learned the harmony singing, so evident on these recordings.

With her new found confidence Lorna felt able to work with other musicians she met on her travels, without her "safety net", some of the fruits of which can be heard on these tracks.

Lorna decided to record some demos, so next Ken Caird came into the mix - recording engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and braw cook!

It became apparent, very quickly, that what was being produced was much more than just a demo session, and so the album was born. 'A Thousand Miles Behind' has given Lorna a chance to pay tribute to the songs, writers and performers that she has loved all her life.
