Review: Amanda Shires at Sounds in the Suburbs

Review: Amanda Shires at Sounds in the Suburbs

Apr 28, 2012

Singer-songwriter Amanda Shires’ first fiddle, bought for the 10 year-old by her dad, was a lime-green Chinese instrument sourced from a pawnbroker in a dusty Texan town (writes Colin MacDonald).

Five years later the teenager was on stage playing it in the ranks of the Playboys, the late Bob Wills’ ground-breaking band credited with creating the irresistible genre of western swing.

In tribute to the musical innovator, who died in 1975, she mentions her regard for Wills ”as the greatest Texan ever”.  But she’s doing plenty more than just talking about the music.

Fast forward to Wednesday 18 April 2012 and the Nashville resident’s appearance for Alan Hendry’s Sounds in the Suburbs in the cosy lounge of the Woodend Bowling and Tennis Club in douce Jordanhill.

With fellow singer-writer and creative collaborator, the guitarist Rod Picott, plus lap steel player Todd Pertll, in companionable support, and herself resplendent in sparkly dress and (probably?) mandatory cowboy boots, this youthful but seasoned performer cheerfully held centre stage – and a full house of young and old paying customers in rapture.

Predictably, both full sets aply reflected in a semi-acoustic treatment the varied delights that grace her third album, Carrying Electricity released by Silver Knife Records last month (and heavily featured on Folkal Point, by the way).

But the length and breadth of the live entertainment from this down-to-earth young lady (with both a wicked sense of humour and well-received quirky stage chat), by way of the utterly-professional musician to the very toes of the afore-mentioned cowboy boots, totally charmed, but still left us wanting more.

Unlike some writers, Amanda rarely feels any need to explain her songs. Making audiences engage more fully is just one among her many talents. Haste ye back!

FOLKAL POINT 16 – Thursday 19 APRIL 2012

TASTING NOTES: Among its other esoteric adventures this week, Folkal Point highlights the spatial extremes of folk-rock  by juxtaposing – without comment – The Byrds’ Eight Miles High, and Robin Campbell’s Doon In The Wee Room — with its vivid evocation of a byegone Springburn that exists, surely, only in memory – among the 120 minutes of the weekly odyssey that exists solely to celebrate musical alternatives from folk to rock.
