Mike Cullison is currently doing a tour of Scotland from Dingwall to Fife and he will visit the Celtic Music Radio studio on Sunday evening to chat to Mary K Burke.

D.R. Nashville review says: “Mike Cullison’s music is muscular, visceral and not for sissies. There’s not an ounce of pretty-boy fluff anywhere in his catalogue. His vocals reflect the spirit of an American poet whose roots extend from the raw Country of the Hank Williams/Carl Smith era to the Sun sound of Memphis to the sweet, sweat-soaked Soul of the Stax studio and is always encased in a deep agreeable groove.”

Mary returns after the Festive Season break with of music from Ireland and Irish singers plus local singer-songwriters and Americana.

This week Mary has as a guest singer Phil Lee from Nashville, USA who is on a UK tour.  Lee’s music is the distillation of about 30 years’ worth of playing in juke joints and bars from one end of the country to the other.

Phill Lee grew up in Durham, North Carolina, in the shadow of tobacco warehouses and Duke University. A musician and songwriter from his teens, Lee’s first professional gig came in the 1960s playing drums for Homer Briarhopper and the Daybreak Gang on a morning television show in Raleigh, N.C.

His songwriting is uncommonly witty and as direct as a kick in the butt. The years he has spent sitting at the back of the bandstand, behind the drums, have given him plenty of time to think about what he’d do if he ever got to the front of the stage. Now that he’s there, he’s not wasting anyone’s time with lame material.

Darcy DaSilva is a singer-songwriter from Moniaive in Dumfries and Galloway. She is inspiired by the countryside and the interesting people she meets. She has inherited much of her musical talent from her family.  Darcy now has a band she gigs with regularly and has recently started working with Tasmanian fiddle extrodinaire, Malcolm Bushby. She is currently working on her album, recorded with her step-Dad at her home in Moniaive. She has worked with musicians such as Karine Polwart, Phil Cunningham, Aaron and Nathon Jones and works closely with Scots singer Alistair Ogilvy. Darcy loves collaborating and is always willing to share her music.

A word from Mary

One of the things I love about what I doat Celtic Music Radio  is the opportunity to showcase up and coming artists on my show at www.celticmusicradio.net and tonights guest Darcy Dasilva  is certainly that. Darcy  has an incredibly beautiful voice and possesses every ingredient required to become a worldwide respected artist with a great future ahead of her. I am certainly rooting for her success and just know my listeners will love her . I first met her three years ago in Moniaiave when her Mum made me very welcome to her house for tea and over the weekend an all night music session . I saw a budding star in Darcy that weekend and she has worked hard at her music since that .

Darcy has formed her own band and one of the members is none other than my wee friend and talented artist in his own right Alisdair Ogilvy Alaisdair has already proved my prediction of his recognition on The Scottish Trad and Folk scene and I remember with fondness his debut on my show singing acapella and speaking of his respect for Rabbie Burns he certainly has the charm of the Late Bard and the looks and the type of guy any parent would be delighted to see their daughter bringing home for tea he has a very unique voice and after making it last year to The Young Trad music of the year finals on BBC 2 he has been nominated again this year . His collaberation with Darcy and her band and his collaberations now with many talented Scottish Musicians can only mean more recognition which in my opinion is well earned and deserved .

DONNIE MUNRO and BAND – A CONCERT for TROON

Saturday 29th October 2011 at Troon Concert Hall

Donnie Munro (pictured above) formerly lead singer with Runrig, has enjoyed a successful solo career since 1999, touring in Scotland and Europe and recording a batch of CDs, his album Heart of America being awarded Album of the Year in the Scottish Trad Music Awards 2006.

Donnie and his Band have responded favourably to the suggestion of coming to perform in the Ayrshire town of Troon.   Any profits accrued  from the concert will be directed to two charities – one local and one of Donnie’s choice:

GARDENING LEAVE is a charity started by Anna Baker Cresswell in 2007 to provide in walled gardens Horticultural Therapy to ex-service personnel. The pilot project was started at Auchincruive in Ayrshire just 15 minutes from the Combat Stress treatment centre at Hollybush where the first referrals came from.

Gardening Leave provides structure, routine, and exercise in safe, peaceful surroundings. The Horticultural Therapist is supported by a group of faithful volunteers.

THE JOSEPH McGOFF FOUNDATION

Joseph, Donnie’s brother-in-law, sadly died of cancer in July 2009.  Joseph was very involved in Third World countries charity work and in memory of him, Donnie’s wife, Teresa has set up The Joseph McGoff Foundation to carry on his very worthwhile work.

Supporting Donnie and his Band will be Eric Faulkner who, as a member of the Bay City Rollers, achieved huge commercial success in the 1970s.  Eric is an accomplished  musician in his own right, and will start the concert with his entertaining act.

Tickets for the concert are available from A Journey Through Time, 51 Ayr Street, Troon, Ayrshire. Telephone 01292 311855.
