Holiday Monday Concert: Fiona Rutherford

Holiday Monday Concert: Fiona Rutherford

May 5, 2012

The May Bank Holiday Monday concert features the Celtic Connections 2012 New Voices piece from Fiona Rutherford.

Fiona began playing harp at the age of 14 learning and at 16 she gained a place at ‘The City of Edinburgh Music School’ where she was exposed to a wide range of musical styles.

She went on to study at Dartington College of Arts in Devon and in 2008, completed a BA in Music Composition with First Class Honours.  Her specialist area of interest is as a composer/performer of new music for the Scottish Harp.

Fiona is gaining increasing recognition for her talents as a film composer and she was the winner of the Clarsach Society’s 2010 Young Composer Award.

Here she premières a new work on the theme of sleep and dreams, performed by a nine-piece vocal and instrumental ensemble, including harps, vocals, strings and piano – and while its topic seems a high-risk one for a festival Sunday lunchtime, Rutherford’s imaginative exploration delves into nightmares and insomnia as well as lullabies.

This is a first broadcast on Celtic Music Radio.  After Fiona there is a recording of Madison Violet at the ABC 02 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections 2012.

May Bank Holiday Monday 7 May at 4.00pm.

Listen Again to the James Clark Jones session

Listen Again to the James Clark Jones session

May 4, 2012

Singer James Clark Jones came into studio 1 on Friday 4 May to chat to Gordon Hotchkiss on the Homeward Bound programme prior to James’ gigs in Glasgow over the May Holiday weekend.

Go to our Listen Again section to listen to this interesting interview on James’ thoughts on music and his homeland and his live session in studio 1 of Celtic Music Radio.

James Clark Jones moved to the Toronto area of Canada as a child from Airdrie, Lanarkshire but has always been connected to Scotland, often using the tension between finding identity in each place as inspiration for his writing.

In fact, his song “Glasgow” draws on the experience many people who emigrate share of growing up in one country, but being unable to ignore the part of you that originated elsewhere.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

May Day is also related to the Celtic festival of Beltane and the Germanic festival of Walpurgis Night.

The May Spring bank holiday is on Monday 7 May.
