This year’s St Mungo Festival takes place between Saturday 8 to Saturday 15 January 2011 and celebrates the life of St Kentigern – better known as St Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow. 

Celtic Music Radio was at the St Mungo’s Bairns Concert at St Andrew’s in the Square on Saturday 8 January 2011. You can listen to this concert from 2pm on Sunday 16th January.

The concert features The Ideal Band, Norrie MacIver, Adam McNaughton, Glasgow Highlife Band, Four Provinces Ceilidh Band and the Neilston and District Pipe Band  &  AKAYA  West African Drummers.

This year’s St Mungo Festival takes place between Saturday 8 to Saturday 15 January 2011 and celebrates the life of St Kentigern – better known as St Mungo, patron saint of Glasgow.

This will be the city’s second official St Mungo Festival, which is honouring the Fife-born monk’s work to establish and expand the city of Glasgow around the sixth century through song, music and dance.

The festival takes the theme Mungo’s Bairns and explores what it means to be Glaswegian.

Incorporated in the festival this year are new and exciting events and  exhibitions,  including a performance of the Ballet of  The Tree and the Bell at the newly renovated St Enoch Centre.

Also featuring this year is some of Glasgow’s most talented musicians, who’s music reflects the multi-cultural  diversity of our cosmopolitan city.

Singers, drummers and musicians from Ghana and Senegal, who reside in the city and are part of Glasgow’s Pan Africa Arts Group, perform music and song from West Africa.

Singer/songwriter/performer and legend, one of Glasgow’s best loved and famous characters. “The Jeely Piece Song”, a humorous song about tower blocks and “Where Is The Glasgow That I Used To Know”, “The Yellow on The Broom”, many more.

Glasgow Gael, and best Gaelic Singer of the Year BBC Scots Trad Music Awards 2004. Maggie sings and plays the clarsach. From a long line of singers from Barra in the Outer Hebrides, with 5 solo CD’s to her name, she performs regularly on TV, radio and internationally.

Neilston and District Pipe Band  &  AKAYA  West African DrummersThe Neilston pipers join Glasgow based drummers from Ghana to perform a unique collaboration of complex West African rhythms whilst the pipers play Melodies from Ghana and the Scottish tradition.

Four Provinces Ceilidh BandGlasgow historical links with Ireland are legendary.  The ‘Four Provinces Band’, founded by the late great Jimmy McHugh, has been playing in Glasgow for over 50 years.  Now led by Jimmy’s son Brendan they feature some of the very best Irish musician who have made this city their home.
