Jason Wilson & Friends The Tron, Glasgow Saturday 20 January 2018.
Scots Canadian, Jason Wilson (keys and vocals) worked with Dave Swarbrick towards the end of Swarb’s life. Jason, his band and guests, are currently touring his tribute show “It Suits Him Well” throughout the UK. The third date of the tour was Celtic Connections Glasgow at The Tron.
Starting at the very beginning with Swarb working with Beryl Marriot (a reggae lope through Blantyre Explosion/Streets of Loredo) showing Jason and his band to be a very tight working unit. Jazz/reggae was the dominant musical form, with band members Marcus Ali (Sax, Whistle, Vocals) and Zaynab Wilson (Cajon, percussion, vocals) making huge contributions to the sound.
Specials guests (for the tour) included John Kirkpatrick on accordion, concertina and vocals, doing a wonderful “Now Be Thankful”, Swarbs long time collaborator, Martin Carthy, – his “Prince Heathen” – was sublime and Simon Swarbrick (nephew and spitting image) on fiddle and mandolin. The ensemble meshed in a jazz/reggae take on Matty Groves (with the closing medley) that left a sold out Tron ecstatic. A unique ensemble well worth seeing
