Review – Dale Watson & The Lone Stars – 29th Jan 2018 at Celtic Connections

Dale Watson and The Lone Stars – Old Fruitmarket  29 Jan 2018

Hailing from Austin, Texas Dale Watson brought his own brand of country music and rockabilly to The Old Fruitmarket as part of Celtic Connections. Accompanied by his band The Lone Stars, named after the state of Texas, Dale treated the audience to a country extravaganza, paying tribute to many country greats as well as singing his own material.

Dale Watsons deep baritone voice boomed out from the speakers as he sang a wide range of country songs in a style he calls “Amerpolitan”. His music goes from country to rockabilly fluently. Alongside Dale who played the electric guitar were his band consisting of Don Pawlack (steel slide guitar), Mike Bernal (drums) and Chris Crepps (double bass).

As much as everyone enjoyed the first half of the show most people were eagerly anticipating the second half which was dedicated to the music of the great Johnny Cash. Dale’s voice and the bands music was perfect for paying tribute to Cash. You could almost shut your eyes and imagine it being him on stage such was the quality of the performance. Hits like “Walk The Line”, “Ring Of Fire””Green Green Grass Of Home” and “Fulsom Prison Blues” reverberated throughout the venue from Watson and his special guests including Rab Noakes and James Grant.

This was a very entertaining show led by Dale Watson who is the ultimate showman. His music covers many generations and is delivered with great aplomb.
