SPECIAL GIG RAISES £1,200 FOR CELTIC MUSIC RADIO
There was little doubt that a special, one-night only performance by a band featuring four of Scotland’s top musicians would be a memorable event.
And so it was when The Marchtown Prophets – Gillian Frame, Jill Jackson, Findlay Napier and Rab Noakes – played a set full of emotion, sparkle and fun at Glasgow’s Glad Café on the last Sunday in November in a fund raiser for Celtic Music Radio.
To a packed house, this superb quartet’s repertoire proved engrossing as they seamlessly veered from traditional tunes to slinky country and heartfelt ballads to rousing folk.
It sounded as if they had been a band for a long time, rather than one who’d pulled together for this gig only. This was truly a testament to their undoubted, widely-regarded skills, honed at gigs and in recording studios over the years.
Overall, there was an unhurried warmth and a genuine grace to their appearance: four individuals with loads of talent and first-class catalogues, bursting with fine material.
Gillian, Jill, Findlay and Rab formed a distinctive, musical collective engaged in a collaboration that created something that was quite unforgettable.
Every song was greeted with huge applause, every tale sparked laughter, every moment in their company was something to savour. No wonder the standing ovation was not a short one.
Support acts, the upcoming, teenage singer/songwriter, Lisa Kowalski from Paisley and the ten-piece old-time, country and bluegrass band, The Arkansas Ramblers, played their parts as well in ensuring the gig – it raised almost £1,200 for the station – will be talked about for some time.
