Breabach – ‘The Desperate Battle of the Birds’

Celtic Music Radio’s CD album of the week is ‘The Desperate Battle of the Birds’ by Breabach.

Breabach are one of the most inventive and diverse bands to have emerged from the Scottish folk scene in recent years. From their foot-stomping reels to their heart warming delivery of songs, there can be no doubt why Breabach has become a household name for many on the folk and roots music scene.

Nominated in the Scots Trad Music Awards for ‘Best Up and Coming Artist’ in 2006 and ‘Best Folk Band’ in 2007 and 2008, Breabach’s huge sound is dominated by the twin Bagpipes of Calum MacCrimmon and Donal Brown. This uncompromising force is complemented by the extraordinary fiddle playing of Patsy Reid and is further supported by the charismatic yet propulsive guitar playing of Ewan Robertson, named BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2008.

‘The Desperate Battle of the Birds’ is their second CD. The band are currently on tour, with dates in Glasgow in Oran Mor on 21 May and at Piping Live on 14 August 2010.

Coast – ‘Coast’

Celtic Music Radio’s CD album of the week is ‘Coast’ by Coast.

The Celtic Music Radio CD Album of the Week comes from a band that rocked the Danny Stage at Celtic Connections 2010. The band traveled all the way from Southampton to Glasgow and got a huge response from the audience in the Exhibition Hall and so good we thought the band’s current album should be album of the Week. ‘Coast’ by is best described by these quotes:

  • “Well, blow me down! You have no idea how average, or less, most of the unsolicited material we get sent in is. COAST on the other hand sound like a first class group.” – Paul Gambaccini, BBC presenter
  • “Awesome! That’s really, really, really good. That’s a great song and I love the guitar work in it. It’s very Runrig-ish actually. I’m sure other people have drawn that comparison. I love it.” – Bruce Guthro, RunrigVisit Coast’s website at: www.coastrock.co.uk/

c Music Radio’s CD album of the week is ‘Seeds of Fools’ by Wendy Arrowsmith.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Glasgow, Wendy’s musical influences as a child were mostly Trad Jazz or Church hymns! Although she learnt Burns and other traditional Scottish songs at school, it wasn’t until she moved to England to marry that she began to really delve into traditional music.

Wendy has sung many different styles of music – ranging from large scale classical choral works, operetta and musicals to backing vocalist for a prog rock band!

But with folk music she has found songs that come from the heart and allow great emotional expression and social commentary. She describes herself as “a singer who plays guitar”, but this shouldn’t detract from Wendy’s musical abilities not just on guitar, but also on whistles, bodhran, mandolin and most recently accordion.
