Album of the Week – Jez Lowe ‘Oubliette’

Written by on August 9, 2025

This latest sparkling collection of twelve songs from JEZ LOWE join a 30-plus album catalogue of releases spanning his 40-year folk music career.

Assisted by his band The Bad Pennies, he delivers an intriguing and always entertaining selection – title track, Oubliette, is from the French word ‘oublier’ which means to forget and it’s a type of dungeon with the only access point being a hole in the ceiling. Those who were thrown into it were abandoned and forgotten.

By way of contrast The Frozen Roman is a humorous song about an ancient Roman, wakened from his sleep by some guys, caught short on a night out. There’s lots of invented Latin phrases that are side splitting.

He is one of the busiest performers in the UK whose songs have been covered by scores of other artists, including Fairport Convention, The Dubliners, The Unthanks,Cherish The Ladies, Mary Black and many others.

Jez will be discussing the new album and his music career with Hugh Taylor on the Album of the Week Show today at midday.
