Album of the Week – Magnus Turpie And Friends ‘Hold On Tight’

Accordionist Magnus Turpie’s debut album features some of his favourite pieces, accompanied by a bunch of musician friends.
Lively dance numbers, tender Gaelic waltzes and a few well known songs vie for attention on a record that offers pleasing depth and wide sonic variety.
Edinburgh-based Magnus – with core band members Linda Campbell (accordion) and Dominic Blaikie (guitar) – originally planned a short-form recording but this then extended to become a long player of grand proportions.
Friends encountered on Magnus’ many musical travels were drafted in to supply fiddle, harp, cello, Scottish small pipes and whistles, to name but some of the instrumentation on display.
The splendid outcome is Hold On Tight – supported by Creative Scotland and National Lottery funding – which yields a joyful, 45-minute fresh take on some veritable, classic Scottish material.
The band has also just learned it has been nominated in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2025 in the Up and Coming Artist of the Year category.
