Album of the Week – Donald WG Lindsay ‘Two Boats Under The Moon’

Written by on June 14, 2025

This excellent two-disc collection is the solo song debut of Scottish musician and musical instrument inventor/builder, Donald WG Lindsay.

The fourteen live-in-the-studio recordings, made during December last year at Watercolour Music in Ardgour in the Scottish Highlands, vividly demonstrate Donald’s musical skills.

He sings, plays guitar and plays on his own “Lindsay System” Scottish small pipes. Roo Geddes plays fiddle, and on three numbers, and piano.

The first disc on Two Boats Under The Moon offers original songs, including the title track, Two Boats Under the Moon, which Donald wrote during his three-year stay on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic.

It also includes a setting of a Scots poem by Vale of Leven poet, Hugh Caldwell, delivered with an original tune he wrote a few years ago. There’s also a little-sung number by Allan Ramsay, An Thou Were My Ain Thing.

The second album’s theme is traditional, mainly Scots, with tracks from a variety of sources and directions. These are songs that have held their place in Donald’s repertoire for many years – in most cases for decades.

Donald will be discussing his music and the albums with Hugh Taylor on our Album of the Week Show today.
