Album of the Week – Lanarkshire Songwriters ‘1820 Songs of Rebellion’
Written by celtic music radio on September 20, 2025
The Lanarkshire Songwriters powerful new album, 1820 Songs of Rebellion, is a stirring musical tribute to the Radical Rising of 1820, which was Scotland’s last armed insurrection.
Marking nearly three decades of songwriting and performance, the group channels the voices of working-class heroes who dared to dream of democracy.
Through original compositions steeped in folk tradition and lyrical storytelling, the album resurrects the spirit of weavers, blacksmiths and shoemakers who risked everything for justice.
From the haunting ballad of James “Purlie” Wilson to the rallying cry of Baird and Hardie, each track captures the emotional pulse of a movement born in hardship and silenced by the gallows.
The album reminds listeners that the fight for fairness is never truly over.
Two of the Lanarkshire Songwriters, John Young and Billy Stewart, will be in conversation with Hugh Taylor on the Album of the Week show today at noon.
