Album of the Week – Sam Carter ‘Sings Nic Jones: Live At Celtic Connections’
Written by celtic music radio on July 11, 2026

Few songwriters have shaped the landscape of English folk music as profoundly as Nic Jones and few contemporary artists have embraced his legacy with the sensitivity, intelligence and sheer musicality of Sam Carter.
Recorded live at Celtic Connections, this album is a glowing tribute to the artist rather than merely a selection of covers.
Nic Jones had retired from singing long before Sam was born. Introduced to his music by an older musician he met at a gig, Sam was instantly hooked, started learning the songs and guitar style then subsequently met and became friends with Nic.
He recorded this album live in Glasgow and discovered that most of his audience were long time Nic Jones’ fans who had seen him live. The live setting created an immediacy that suited this material perfectly. The audience, recognising familiar melodies, joined in on choruses, all beautifully captured by the talented young engineeer, Carla Feurstein.
There was, and is, a sense of connection between artist and audience, between past and present, and between two musicians who share an instinct for melody and narrative.
One review said: “The album is a celebration of a remarkable live recording that honours one of folk music’s great legacies while offering something fresh, thoughtful and beautifully played.”
On our Album of the Week show today at midday, Hugh Taylor, who was at the concert, will chat to Sam about the album and the music.
